LT-3 MEAT AND MILK
• Sustained performance throughout the season

Why re-seed? - Poor swards cost money
Old grass can cost £150-200 per acre each year in lost income

D – value is the proportion of nutrients consumed by an animal which
is digested and absorbed by the animal.

• Each additional unit of D – value = 5% increase in beef LWG
• Average beef LWG at grass = 0.8 kg/day
• 5% of 0.8 kg/day = 0.04 kg/animal/day
• Assume stocking rate of 1.5 animals/acre and 150 grazing days
• 0.04 kg/animal/day x 1.5 animals/acre x 150days = 9 kgs/acre
• 9 kgs LWG at £1.00 per kg = £9 per acre per unit of D – value

THEREFORE 1 unit D – value is worth £9 per acre per year
